Spatial Links 14 May 2011

Apologies for the lack of posting over the past few weeks. I’ve been all over the country running workshops – hello to those in Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and Hervey Bay who I have seen over the past few weeks. I hope you have had a chance to play around with the tools we covered on the day!

The links this week are AMAZING! All of them. I promise. Spend a wee bit of time on each one, here they are.

  • The first link is really exciting. National Geographic have revamped their education page and come up with this brilliant online mapping tool. You can view a range of data from climate to population density to land cover. You can also zoom right into locations and view satellite imagery. Best of all you can add markers, text, lines and shapes to your map before exporting as an image file. Wonderfully simple to do as well.

  • The second linkis the NSW Land and Property Management Authority’s NSW Atlas. This exciting application provides some great demographic, economic and environmental data for NSW in a really easy-to-use interface. If you are teaching in NSW, I urge you to check this one out and to pass it on to your colleagues.

  • The final link this week is a pretty simple online GIS. The World Resources Institute have developed an online map showing the threat level to the world’s reefs. The map uses Google Maps as a base and allows you to navigate to any location on earth. Once there, you can view the threats to the reef. Look along the Great Barrier Reef, what is common to those areas under higher threat? Look at some other countries. How does their level of threat differ to Australia’s? Why is this?

Enjoy! If you have online sites worth promoting with other teachers out there, share them in the comments.
